Born in 1980 to an artist mother, Mac has been drawing and studying art independently since childhood. He has been inspired by the surrounding Mexican & Chicano culture of the American Southwest, Religious art, Pin-up art, Asian calligraphy & brushwork, and a wide range of artists including Caravaggio, Vermeer, Mucha, Gerome and Moebius. He started painting with acrylics in the early nineties and soon followed with spraypaint around 1994. He has been decorating freight trains with colorful characters & portraits since 1996. Around 1998 he also began to paint technicolor aerosol interpretations of classic paintings by old European masters. This led to being fcommissioned in 2003 by the Groeninge Museum in Brugge, Belgium to paint his interpretations of classic Flemish Primitive paintings in the museum's collection. This experience cemented a desire to fuse the traditions and craftsmanship of the past with the bright colors and vitality of modern graffiti. He has been commissioned to paint murals across the US, as well as in Belgium, France, Denmark, and Mexico. In recent years he has been dividing his time between completing spraypaint murals, graffiti, painting photorealistic acrylic scenes, creating stained glass pieces, exploring and expanding his Sumi brushwork techiques, and his first love of pencil drawing.
